Abstract
The purpose of this study is to understand the reason why retired baby boomers in Korea choose to (re)turn to farming, (re)turn to rural areas in the second half-year of their life and to examine how they prepare for it. For this purpose, we selected four of the study participants who were preparing for (re)turning to farming after their retirement in ¡¸The qualitative longitudinal study of the retired baby boomer s career path in Korea(2014 )¡¹ by Korea Employment Information Service(KEIS). And we analyzed their motive and preparation experience of (re)turning to farming, (re)turning to rural areas in depth. We also had additional interview in 2015 with two of the study participants who could not seem to (re)turn to farming, practically. According to analysis, we can find various and complex reasons from four aspects( Career path and retirement background , Individual and family background , Perception and experience of reemployment , Meaning of work ) why some retired baby boomers choose to (re)turn to farming even if they had worked in totally different job fields from farming for a long time. We can also know that some study participants had an vague idea about (re)turning to farming and prepared for it searching information, having an education, visiting rural areas before their retirement. The other participants thought about (re)turning to farming after their retirement and had been preparing for it less definitely. And we can find that objection of their wives , no friends or family in rural area , and insufficient nation support to help their adjustment and settlement in rural area are recognized as obstructions on their road. How each of the study participants will solve these obstructions is one of the important issues in our follow-up study. Finally, we can categorize the study participants as type of evasion and type of challenge , explain each characteristic of these two types, and suggest policy implications for them.
